Obesity: Stop Shaming, Start Understanding

rainbow umbrella among black umbrellas The false belief that excess body fat is caused by eating too many calories and not exercising enough gives society a logical reason to blame obese individuals for their sorry plight. Yet there are plenty of clues that overweight people are fundamentally different than thin people.

If we acknowledge that obesity is just one manifestation of insulin resistance—the root cause of illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver, depression, and even certain forms of cancer—how can we move beyond our prejudices and approach the condition from a more respectful and productive perspective?
